Packing List

Packing list for Ny-Ålesund trip and other overnight trips:

Must have:

  • Several layers of warm (woolen) thermal underwear (bring at least one complete change of woolen thermal underwear)

  • Several pairs of (woolen) warm socks

  • Two pairs each of: warm hat or beanie/gloves/mittens/buff

  • Warm woolen sweater, alternatively down jacket

  • Rainproof layer (jacket should have a hood)

  • Warm sleeping bag

  • Hiking boots (I recommend high cut if you have; the arctic tundra can be quite muddy in the summer)

  • Power bank (fully charged)

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen

Nice to have:

  • Sleeping mask (the arctic summer sun never sets)

  • Ear plugs (your bunk buddy might snore)

  • Small (Microfiber) towel

  • Crocs/ slippers for indoor use (please limit yourselves to two pairs of footwear per person incl those for indoor use)

  • Swimwear (if you're brave)

    Packing list for day trips:

    Must have:

    • Warm enough clothes for the trip at hand and the weather that day. Remember that the wind chill of sailing together with sitting still makes it seem colder than forecasted.

    • Wind proof layer. Rainproof layer if rain is forecasted.

    • Hiking boots (I recommend high cut if you have; the arctic tundra can be quite muddy in the summer)

    Nice to have:

    • Sunglasses and sunscreen

Tips for efficient packing for longer trips:

  • Pack in a duffel back or backpack! Do not bring a hard suitcase to a sailing trip in the Arctic!

  • Pack as lightly as you can. 5 people +  luggage and safety equipment already take up quite a lot of space, and keep in mind that all luggage needs to be stowed away when sailing. One example would be to bring a medium-sized duffelbag + a small backpack for day trips. You probably need less stuff than you think(:

  • But bring enough warm clothes! I suggest basically skipping civilian clothing entirely, and remember to dress in layers: a base layer of woolen thermal underwear, a mid-layer of wool. fleece or down, and a an outer layer(shell) to keep the wind and rain out.

  • Shoes: I suggest bringing one pair of high cut(high ankle) hiking boots for both boat deck and land use, and one pair of crocs/slippers for indoor boat use.

  • Remember to bring a warm sleeping bag.
